CPR/AED Only Training

CPR AED-only training is a streamlined course focused on teaching the essential skills needed to respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, specifically the use of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This course is designed for individuals who need to learn life-saving techniques related to sudden cardiac arrest but do not require full first aid training. This course is ideal for those who want focused training on CPR and AED usage without the need for a broader first aid curriculum.

Key Components of CPR AED Training

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Purpose: To keep oxygenated blood circulating to the brain and vital organs when the heart stops beating.

Techniques:

Chest Compressions:

  • For adults: Performed at a depth of 2 inches (5 cm) and at a rate of 100-120        compressions per minute.
  • For children and infants: Adjusted compression depth and technique based on size and age.

Rescue Breathing:

  • Mouth-to-mouth breaths or breaths given through a mask, delivered in a 30:2        compression-to-breath ratio.
  • Hands-only CPR (no breaths) may be taught for lay responders as an option when unable or unwilling to perform rescue breaths.

CPR for Different Age Groups: Specialized training for CPR in adults, children, and infants, including how to adjust compression techniques.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Use

Purpose: To use a portable device that delivers a shock to the heart, aiming to restore a      normal heart rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.

Techniques:

  • Turning on the AED: Participants learn how to power the device and follow the AED’s voice prompts.
  • Pad Placement: Properly positioning the AED pads on the patient’s chest.
  • Shock Delivery: Understanding when and how to deliver a shock, based on the AED’s analysis of the heart rhythm.
  • Safety Considerations: Ensuring the area around the patient is clear of       bystanders before delivering the shock.
  • Post-Shock CPR: Immediately resuming CPR after the AED shock to continue oxygenating the brain and heart.

Emergency Response Steps

  • Scene Safety: Ensuring the environment is safe for the rescuer and the victim.
  • Assessment: Quickly checking for breathing and pulse to determine if CPR is needed.
  • Activation of Emergency Response System: Calling 911 or getting someone      to call for help as soon as an emergency is identified.

Certification

Upon completion, participants receive certification that is valid for two years. Recertification or refresher courses are required every two years to maintain proficiency.

Training Providers

Courses are available through organizations like the American Heart Association (AHA), Red Cross, KnowCPR, and other accredited institutions. These providers offer flexible course schedules, including in-person and online blended learning options.

Who Should Take This Training?

  • Workplace Responders: Employees responsible for emergency response within their work environment.
  • Teachers, Coaches, and Fitness Instructors: Individuals who may need to respond to cardiac emergencies in schools, gyms, or community settings.
  • General Public: Anyone who wants to be prepared to assist in a cardiac emergency but doesn’t need first aid training.
